DIY Glossary - S to U

Sanding Block

A small block of wood or rubber around which abrasive paper is wrapped to make it easier to use.

Scaffolding

A frame of metal poles and planks used to give a stable working platform.

Scraper

A flat-bladed tool used to remove paint, wallpaper and other finishes. Wide blades available for wallpaper and narrow blades for paint.

Screed

A thin layer of mortar used to give a smoother finish over a bed of rough mortar.

Sealant

Silicone or other product used for creating a waterproof seal around baths, etc.

Shave Hook

A tool designed for the removal of paint from moulded or detailed areas. The blade is usually triangular, with three differently shaped edges.

Shuttering

A frame of timber used to hold concrete into a shape as it sets.

Skew

The method of driving nails into wood at an angle to increase the strength of the joint.

Soffit

The horizontal boards at the edge of the roof eaves.

Soil Pipe

A large vertical drainage pipe (usually directly outside the bathroom) designed to carry away toilet waste.

Spirit Level

Most often a straight, lightweight bar containing two or three small liquid filled tubes. The air bubble in the tubes is used to check if vertical and horizontals are level.

Steel Rule

A long metal ruler used to mark out or provide a straight edge.

Steel Wool

A small ball of steel fibres used for cleaning wood and metal.

Stillson Wrench

A large, heavy-duty wrench with an adjustable jaw. Used for gripping round fittings.

Stopcock

A brass tap fitted to the mains pipe to allow the supply of water to be turned off.

Straight Edge

A long straight metal (or sometimes wooden) rule used for marking or checking surfaces are level.

String

The wide, flat boards running up the side of a staircase to hold the treads and risers.

Stud

A vertical wooden strut used in partition walls.

Tenon Saw

A straight edged saw with a reinforced spine. Designed for cutting wooden joints.

Tesserae

The individual tile pieces of a tile mosaic.

Trap

A device fitted to the waste pipe of sinks, etc, to stop smells and animals coming from the drain. Works simply by trapping a small amount of water.

Try Square

A metal blade set at a right angle to a metal or wooden block. Used for accurately checking and marking 90 degree angles.
