DIY Glossary - V to W

Varnish

A clear coating for wood. Available in many different shades and compositions, but all designed to protect the wood to some degree, whilst keeping the grain visible.

Veneer

A thin top layer of decorative wood applied to a body of less attractive timber.

Vinyl

Strong, all-purpose material generally used as a floor covering. Available in a massive range of colours and designs.

Waste Pipe

The drainage pipe that takes used water away from sinks, baths, etc.

White Spirit

Clear liquid used to clean or thin paints and varnishes. Made from petroleum and as such is flammable.

Wire Brush

A normally small brush with stiff wire bristles. Used for cleaning paint and rust. Very effective on detailed areas.

Wire Strippers

A small hand tool designed to strip the outer sheath of electrical wire, whilst retaining the inner core.
