Painting Staircases

Start with the bannisters, taking care to avoid runs (this is where they will be most noticeable). Now, starting at the top of the staircase, paint the treads, risers and strings. If the staircase will need to be used before the paint will have dried, paint all the risers but only every other tread.

The staircase can now still be used (with care) and you can come back and paint the unpainted treads once the others are properly dry.
