Reducing Fire Risk
There were roughly 39000 house fires in the Uk in 2010, almost 32000 of which were accidental. That works out to a staggering 106 fires every day of the year. These fires resulted in over 200 fatalities and over 6500 injuries to those involved (source: Department for National Statistics)
A huge percentage of the house fires in the UK every year are completely preventable with only a little bit of thought and planning. There are several very easy ways to reduce the risk of fire in your home.
1. Make sure all electrical appliances are in a state of good repair
2. Remove plugs from sockets when going away on holiday.
3. Avoid overloading extension leads and power adaptors.
4. Do not trail extension leads underneath carpets. If damaged they can ignite the carpet.
5. If you have a wood burning fire, ensure it is properly guarded.
6. Store flammable liquids (turps, thinners, etc) outside, rather than under the stairs or in kitchen cupboards.
7. Fit smoke alarms and check them regularly.
8. Keep your workshop or garage free of rubbish, etc, and dispose of oily rags after use.
9. Buy and install a good quality fire blanket and extinguisher in the kitchen. Having one in a garage or workshop is also a good idea.
